Sam Victory surveys his options for St. Marys against Kilmainhamwood

St Mary’s 4-06 Kilmainhamwood 1-15

St Mary’s championship started yesterday on a beautiful summer evening on an immaculate Syddan pitch.

And it started as many may have expected, early dominance from the much-fancied Kilmainhamwood and after 8 minutes found themselves down 4 points to no score. Kilmainhamwood landing 1 from a free and 3 from play. St Mary’s needed to gain a foothold in this game, and it eventually came when Cormac Victory flicked a loose ball towards his brother Sam who finished confidently to the net. However, the next score came from Kilmainhamwood a point from play. St Mary’s then responded with their second goal, Adam Craven found Sean Nulty with a superb pass, who calmly rounded the keeper to finish to the net. St Mary’s now found themselves ahead for the first time. They extended this lead by 2 with fine pointed frees from Cormac Victory. Kilmainhamwood pulled back 2 points before Sam Victory picked up the ball 21 yards from goal rounded 2 defenders and rifled to the roof of the net to score his second and St Mary’s 3 goal. After 2 Kilmainhamwood points St Mary’s finished the first half scoring with a fine point from play, courtesy of James Lynch.

Half time: St Mary’s 3-03 Kilmainhamwood 0-09

St Marys got the perfect start to the second half with James Lynch spotting a gap, broke the line and finished excellently to the keepers right. Cormac Victory then converted 2 fine frees, 1 an impressive long-range effort, St Mary’s now found themselves 8 to the good. However, just as St Marys had out scored Kilmainhamwood by 4 goals in the preceding 25 minutes Kilmainhamwood would now outscore St Marys by 1-05 in the last 15 minutes of the second half. Maithiu Brien did score a fantastic long-range effort 10 from the end however that marked of the Mary’s scoring. And despite holding a 2-point led heading into injury time the St Mary’s lads couldn’t hold out and in the 5th minute of injury time Kilmainhamwood kicked the equaliser. Delight for them, disappointment for the Mary’s men, however upon reflection this was a very impressive performance for long periods from the very young, relatively inexperienced and unfancied Boynesiders.

Well done lads on to the next round against Cortown.
