August 10, 2024

Dan O'Neill Wolfe Tones moves into block Ryan Farnham's (Gaeil Colmcille) shot during the Meath SFC clash at Pairc Tailteann

Wolfe Tones 0-9 Gaeil Colmcille 0-8

When these two sides met in the same round last year Wolfe Tones were comfortable 14 points winners. From the word go this game was going to be different with both sides bringing the defensive 'A' game to Pairc Tailteann.

Minus regular keeper Ciaran O Gallachóir, manager Paddy Martin took the unusual step in playing Cian Ward between the posts. It was a brief cameo for the former star forward but in his four minutes on the pitch he produced a smart save from a Seamus Mattimoe shot. Ward was replaced by Daniel McHugh who went on to have an outstanding game on his debut.

Wolfe Tones got a great start with points from Fiachra and Caolan Ward and Adam O’Neill. Gaeil Colmcille had to wait until the 16th minute for their opener, keeper Barry Farrelly obliging from a free. Another debutant Andrew Gormley made it a one point game nine minutes later and Farrelly from another free made sure the teams went to the dressing rooms level on 3 points each.

Gormley got is second two minutes into the second half. Ryan Farnham got the Gael’s first score from play on the 40th minute and Kells were still one up. Three unanswered points from Caolan Ward, Dan and Adam O’Neill put Wolfe Tones back in control. Two great scores from Gormley and substitute Evan Sheridan left one in it with three minutes remaining. The impressive Ward added the insurance point in injury time. Gael Colmcille needed a goal and had a chance in the last play of the game but Farrelly’s shot went over the bar to leave Tones one point winners.

The winners take on Dunboyne next, Gaeil Colmcille meet Curraha both at Pairc Tailteann.

Wolfe Tones scorers: Caolan Ward 0-4, Adam O’Neill 0-3, Dan O’Neill and Fiachra Ward 0-1 each.

Gaeil Colmcille scorers: Barry Farrelly and Andrew Gormley 0-3 each, Ryan Farnham and Evan Sheridan 0-1 each.
