Kilmainhamwood played St Mary’s in the first round of championship in a well presented Syddan pitch.

Kilmainhamwood started the quicker of the 2 teams with Kian Gillespie collecting the ball from the start to break down the field and slot over a well taken point. This started a 10 minute period were Kilmainhamwood would be on top and collected a few more scores from Shane Townley and 2 from Rian Stafford. Kilmainhamwood lost their away here with St Mary’s putting 2 goals in quick succession on the score board to take the lead. Niall Conlan responded in kind to narrow the gap to 1. St Mary’s exerted pressure on Kilmainhamwood and found a few scores from 2 frees another goal and a point from play. Kilmainhamwood were trying hard to get back in and 2 well taken scores from Rian Stafford kept the Wood in it coming into the interval.

Half Time: Kilmainhamwood 0-9 St Mary’s: 3-3

St Mary’s started the quicker of the 2 teams with a goal in the first minute of the second half. Kilmainhamwood had a battle to get back into the game from here and the revival started from the boot of Rian Stafford with a free to get the scoreboard ticking. A few minutes later nice inter linking from the Bennett brother Cathal and Niall put Niall through on goal and he took his chance with aplomb. Kilmainhamwood could sense the gap could be closed from here at this point there was 2 points in it. St Mary’s had 2 frees converted to extend the gap to 4 and take the edge out of the game. Kilmainhamwood probed for more scores and collected them with a fisted point from Killian Russell and another Niall Conlan effort. With the clock in the red and St Mary’s up by 1 Kilmainhamwood knew they needed a score. With everyone packed inside Mary’s 45 Kilmainhamwood moved the ball around through Oisin Fagan and Ciaran Doyle, Rian Stafford found himself free and received the ball to swing it over the bar with last kick of the ball to end the game with a draw.

Kilmainhamwood move on to play Cortown in the 3rd round on the 8th of September as we have a bye in the second round.
