Eoghan Dillon fights for possession for Syddan during the Division 10 FL final against St. Brigids at Cortown

Syddan 3-11 St. Brigids 2-11

Syddan narrowly overcome battling St. Brigid’s on Friday evening to secure the Division 10 league final title at a very appointed Cortown GFC. PHOTOS

St. Brigid’s got a dream start and had the ball in the Syddan net after 30 seconds much to the shock of the large travelling Syddan support. Syddan replied straight away with a super goal of their own by Eoghan Dillon. Eoghan gathered the ball on the half way line and zig zagged his way through the St. Brigid’s defence to score a marvellous goal. An excellent pointed free from distance followed from Cormac Dardis before Eoghan Dillon had the umpire busy again rattling in another goal on 5 minutes. Not to be outdone by his younger sibling, centre back Daire Dillon got in on the action with an excellent finish for a goal on 25 mins. Eoghan capped a very impressive opening half with 2 further points before the break with another by Ben Blakmore which left the score at the interval Syddan 3-4 St. Brigid’s 1-7

St. Brigid’s forward line had scored some excellent points in the opening period and it was obvious that the Ballincree men would not go down without a fight. Points from frees and play brought them closer and they brought matters level with a fisted goal.

The sides were all square with 5 minutes to go when Daire Dillon scored an excellent point from a narrow angle. Further scores from distance by Cathal Dardis and Jack Reid stretched Syddan’s lead to 3 points going into injury team. Syddan’s defence well marshalled by Cathal Duff and captain Tommy Meade held firm, the long whistle was blown bringing joy to the large Syddan contingent in attendance.

Well done to all the Syddan players and it took a full panel effort to get us to the final and over the line. Well done also to mentors Shay, Philly & Mickey Garland on this success.

Special mention to Cortown GFC & all volunteers who ran everything well on the evening and Keith Sheerin and his match officials.
