FL Div 3 semi final: Rathkenny win promotion back to Division Two

Delight for Rathkenny's Keith Curtis

Rathkenny reached the final of the P S Supplies Doors and Floors Football League Division 3 competition following this promotion play off semi final win over Clann na nGael, played in Rathkenny last Wednesday evening, July 17th.

The hosts opened the scoring with a second minute free from full forward Keith Curtis. The visitors replied with a goal on four minutes following a move down the right wing. Rathkenny steadied the ship with three points on the bounce through Joey Curtis, Ciaran O’Hare, and Keith Curtis to lead by one on nine minutes. With thirteen minutes on the clock the visitors had edged back in front with consecutive points from frees. David Curtis then levelled matters with a free on the quarter hour mark.

Noah Jenkinson hit two lovely points from play, quickly followed by another from Keith Curtis as the hosts went three up with seven minutes remaining in the half. The visitors hit back with two points from play to leave just a point in it entering the final minutes of the half. A pointed free from Keith Curtis was quickly replied to by the Athboy outfit as referee Peter O’Halloran brought first half proceedings to a close, Rathkenny 0-09 Clann na nGael 1-05.

The second half was a tight affair with only a single score in the opening quarter. A free on thirty-six minutes levelled matters as Rathkenny missed several scoring opportunities. 

The hosts finally found their range with a pointed free from Keith Curtis. This was followed instantly from David Curtis. The all important second half score came from sub Eoghan Heavey as he calmly slotted home following great work by Noah Jenkinson who attacked at pace, laid off to Joey Curtis who found Heavey who found the net. This left the gap at five points with less than ten minutes left on the clock. Keith Curtis sent over the next three scores (two from frees) as the gap became eight points.

Clann na nGael finally got their second point of the half on twenty-seven minutes as Rathkenny managed the ball and played out the clock. With the final kick of the game the visitors sent over from play and Peter O’Halloran blew for full time.
