Kilmessan left it late to run out comfortable winners over Clann na nGael in this opening round of the Meath SHC Group A match played in perfect conditions at Pairc Tailteann.

In the last ten minutes of both halves the winners outscored Clann na nGael 0-15 to 0-1.

With 15 minutes gone in the opening half Clann na Gael were good value for their 0-8 to 0-4 lead. Eamon Og O Donnchadha was giving the Kilmessan defence a torrid time and his four points along with fine scores from Callum O’Sullivan, Joe Ennis and Eoin Kelleher gave the Athboy/Rathcairn combination that early lead.

From there on it was all Kilmessan. Inspired by Luke Horan, who finished the game with 13 points, Nicky Horan’s men scored twelve points to go in at the break 0-16 to 0-10 in front. Horan accounted for 6, full forward Mark Horan (2) and one each from Darragh Horan, Kris Gorman, Adam O’Neill and Seanie Doyle put the eventual winners in control at the break.

That control all changed in the opening twenty minutes of the second half dominated by Clann na nGael. Points O Donnchadha (2), O’Sullivan, Ennis (4), Josh McGrath and Killian Swaine had the game all square at 0-19 each with ten minutes remaining. Indeed Clann na nGael could have hit the front but for a few smart saves from former county senior manager Steven Clynch in the Kilmessan goal.

Luke Horan steadied the Kilmessan ship with his third point of the half and from there the men in Blue and White pushed on and outscored Clann na nGael 0-8 to 0-1 in the home stretch.

Kilmessan scorers: Luke Horan 0-13, Mark Horan and Seanie Doyle 0-4 each, Darragh Horan 0-2, Kris Gorman Adam O'Neill and Marty Mulhall 0-1each

Clann na nGael scorers: Eamon Og O Donnchadha and Joe Ennis 0-7 each, Callum O'Sullivan 0-2, Diarmaid O'Donnchadha, Killian Swaine, Josh McGrath, Eoin Kelleher 0-1 each.
