Under 15 Div 1 final: Goals seal title for 'Cilles'

Fresh for their historic All Ireland Feile success St. Colmcilles claimed their second piece of silverware in the space of week with this five point win over St. Ultans Cortown Gaels at a splendid Pairc Tailteann yesterday. PHOTOS
The Seasiders second team claimed the Premier Under 15 Football League title three hours earlier at Ardcath.
Full forward Ben Mullen got the scoreboard working for the winners. St. Ulltans Cortown Gaels enjoyed their best period in the game in the opening 15 minutes and with three points from Dara Loughran and one from midfielder Patrick Smyth they found themselves 0-4 to 0-3 in front.
The game turned in favour of St. Colmcilles in the next six minutes. Midfielder Nicholas Ehicoya scored a brilliant goal although he did take two hops in the process, and soon after Mullen was on hand to score their second from the penalty spot. The impressive Sean Whelan finished out the half with a brace of points and St. Colmcilles went to the dressing room 2-5 to 0-5 in front.
Conn Brennan reduced the lead with the opening score of the second half but St. Colmcilles responded with fine efforts from Niall O’Donoghue and Whelan.
With seven minutes gone Cilles Liam O’Donoghue was shown a black card by referee Keith Sheerin and the combination side had the lead reduced to five before O’Donoghue’s return. The talented defender was only back on the field when he had the ball in the the net and quash any hopes of an Ultans Cortown revival. The combination side finished the game the stronger and were rewarded with a Brennan point and a goal from Matthew Martin. They had a second goal from Eli Clynch disallowed in the final moments as time ran out for them and St. Colmcilles were crowned champions.
After the game Minor Board Chairman Ray Finnegan presented the Under 15 Division 1 FL Cup to St. Colmcilles captain Liam O’Donoghue.
