FL Div 1: Simonstown win local derby to take home Heaney Cup

On an evening more suited to winter than the end of June, Simonstown Gaels won the local derby and brought home the Heaney Cup. Thanks to all who supported the annual collection for the Oncology Unit in Drogheda, in memory of Seamus Heaney.

The first score of the game came after five minutes, when Simonstown found the net in the town end. Two minutes later, Craig Munnelly O’Toole responded with a point at the opposite end of the pitch.

Between the ninth and eighteenth minutes, the home side kicked three points from play to extend their lead. In the 21st minute, Evan Brady kicked O’Mahony’s second point of the half.

With both sides kicking a number of wides, ten minutes passed without score and an injury time point from Simonstown left five between them at the break

Jake Regan opened the scoring in the second half, kicking a point from play after two minutes. Seven minutes passed without score before Simonstown kicked two points in quick succession.

Aodhan Mallon scored an impressive point in the twelfth minute, but was soon nullified by a similar effort from the hosts at the opposite end.

The sides exchanged points in the final quarter of the game, with Robbie Keelaghan scoring twice for the Brews Hill outfit, but Simonstown had already done enough to claim the two points on offer
