Football league semi-finals are scheduled for the weekend of July 19th, and the finals the last week of July.

Football league semi-finals are scheduled for the weekend of July 19th, and the finals the last week of July.

As we come towards the end of the restructured football leagues, it is worth restating the following:

From Division 1 to 6, there will be semi-finals at top and bottom.

Divisions 1 to 6 will be 1st v 4th, 2nd v 3rd for promotion and/or place in league final.

Division 1 to 5 will be 9th v 12th, 10th v 11th for relegation.

Division 6 will be 7th v 10th, 8th v 9th for relegation.

The two winners of the semi-finals, at the top, from Division 2 to 6, will be promoted.

All semi-final winners at the top will compete in the league final.

The two losers of the semi-finals at the bottom will be relegated.

The top ranked team of the 4 semi-finalists will play at home, at the top and bottom, the other semi-final will be at a neutral venue (2nd v 3rd, 10th v 11th , 8th v 9th (Div 6 only))

Some bottom ranked teams may wish to be relegated and where this is flagged in advance by the club, no relegation semi-final will take place.

From Divisions 7 to 10, the two top teams will play in the final.

Where points are tied, overall points difference, as per GAA Code 13.2 (A) and Code 11.1 (5), is used to rank in County league competitions.

The purpose of football league semi-finals is as follows:

To add integrity to the league by ensuring clubs that provide county players, not available for league, are not unnecessarily punished and have a chance to play them in games that determine their league status.

To provide additional opportunity for development by having another series of games with real consequence.

To ensure as many league games as possible have something at stake.

From Divisions 7 to 10 the primary purpose of the leagues is to provide a meaningful games programme for all players. From next year, the guesswork from grading will be reduced further and the participation/development ethos of the lower leagues will be further reinforced.
