FL Div 6: Marys good run continues

June 16, 2024

St. Mary's Sam Victory

Drumconrath 2-12 St Marys 4-12

St Marys continued their recent run of good form with a hard fought 6 point win over the hosts Drumconrath on Sunday morning.

It was a great morning for football on an immaculate Drumconrath pitch, and at the earlier than usual time of 10:30am referee Patrick Clarke got proceedings underway.

Marys got the first couple of points of the game through two frees from Cormac Victory, before the home side hit back with two points of their own. The sides traded blows before the away side got the first goal of the game, Sean Nulty finishing from close range after good work from James Lynch. Marys would’ve looked to push on from here, but instead Drumconrath took the initiative. A goal was followed by a couple of Daniel Byrne frees and the home side were now two in front. As the seconds ticked down to the half time whistle, Marys were in for goal again. A slick move between Sam Victory, making his first appearance of the season after time away on Erasmus and Sean Nulty, Victory finished low to the bottom corner to leave the away side a point up at half time and with the momentum on their side.

Marys started the second half through a Nulty point, before Drumconrath were in for their second goal of the game, reacting quickest to a point attempt which hit the post to push themselves in front once more. The away side followed up with scores through Ben Loughran and S Victory, before Victory was in for his second goal of the game, finishing well from close range. Drumconrath kept in touch through more Byrne frees as well the elusive Matthew Durnin and Stephen Crosby. Marys had to play the last 10 minutes with 14 men after Sam Victory seen black for a late challenge, with Drumconrath being reduced to 13 themselves as a result of two second bookable offences before the end. Further points from Nulty, C Victory and an excellent 45 from Liam Lynch kept the Marys at arms length, and the away sides superior work rate was rewarded as the game entered injury time. Great work from the away side forcing the turnover resulted in Tadhg Dixon being pulled down for a penalty with the goal on. Cormac Victory stepped up and made no mistake from the spot, sending the Marys six clear with the final whistle sounding soon afterwards. A good performance from the men in green and red against a dogged home side, meaning a win in the last game against St Patricks will see them make the semi final.
