June 10, 2024

St. Vincents Conor Harford

St Vincents 0-17, Clann na nGael 1-08

St. Vincent’s welcomed Clann na nGael to Masterson Park for this Round 8 fixture of Division 3. Conditions were ideal and both teams served up a cracker for their supporters.

The home side got off to a flyer with Nigel Hand getting the opening score with a point from play inside the first minute. We had chances to build on this lead early on but were guilty of some wayward shooting. Both teams were playing flat out and produced some glorious football. Conor Harford doubled the lead with a converted mark after a through ball from Adam Tuite. From the kickout St. Vincent’s won the ball and Adam Tuite burst through the defence only to see his effort slice off his boot and be saved by the visitor’s keeper. The men from Athboy never eased up and were rewarded with their first score of the game after a speculative ball over the top was volleyed over for a point. The men in maroon replied when Bob Tallon dropped a high ball in towards Conor Harford who turned his man and shot towards goal, only to see his effort pushed over the bar by the keeper. Clann na nGael responded with two well worked points from play. Nigel Hand converted a free to restore St. Vincent’s lead in the 21st minute. Parity was restored when Evan Connor could only push a goalward bound ball over the bar. Clann na nGael took the lead for the first time when a long ball in was gathered by the corner forward before being driven home to the back of the net. Patient build up play from St. Vincent’s was rewarded when Conor Harford pointed form play. Another point came from Adam Tuite who broke from the opposition 45 with the ball and pointed to leave the minimum between the sides. The final score of the half came from Mark Crawley with a rare move forward from corner back to split the uprights and leave the game tied at half time.

Half Time, St Vincents 0-07 Clann na nGael 1-04

With both teams and their supporters having had time to catch their breath at half time you’d be forgiven for thinking the second half would be played at a more sedate pace. St. Vincent’s had other ideas and burst forward from the throw in with Harford being fouled before Nigel Hand popped over the resulting free. The home side continued to push forward, and Hand again slotted over a free kick. The Athboy men worked a lovely score which started deep in their own half to leave a point between the sides. Patrick McGill floated a long, high ball in which was punched outfield by the Clann na nGael keeper to Ryan Hand who cooly popped it over the bar. Another point from play came from Conor Harford after great movement from his teammates to leave 3 points between the sides. A period of sustained possession was rewarded with a point from play by Barry O’Sullivan. Playing with confidence the Ardcath men added to their tally with a point from Stefan O’Neill, before McGill was denied by the upright. The visitors got a great point from play shortly after following good build up play and movement of the ball. Gary Tuite burst forward from midfield with the ball but was fouled on his way through. Hand converted the free to put 5 points between the sides with 15 minutes to play. The Athboy men pointed from a free 2 minutes later. Nigel Hand added to his tally with a pointed mark following a through ball from Ryan Hand. He made it 7 points shortly after when he took a lovely pass from Stefan O’Neill and slotted it over the bar. Adam Tuite wrapped up the scoring for St. Vincent’s with a fisted point from a tight angle. The visitors pointed a free deep in injury time before Hugo Whoriskey blew the full-time whistle.

A good win for the home side, who move to 2nd in the table. Next up is a trip to Dunsany for Round 9.
