FL Div 3: Final quarter surge seals win for Nobber

June 08, 2024

Nobber's Niall Farrell

Nobber 0-15 Bective 2-6

Nobber welcomed Bective to their home grounds on Thursday evening last in their Round 8 Division 3 A League fixture, played under nice dry conditions with a breeze blowing towards the O’ Carolan College end of the ground. The pitch looking in great condition, served up an entertaining summer evening game of football. The North Meath men started the brightest with 2 points within the opening 10 minutes scored by corner forward Dale Larkin and teenager Gustas Povecivios, in his first competitive start for the black and ambers.

Nobber failed to register a score for quite a while with Bective scoring 2 – 2 without reply. Martin Morgan’s charges had chances, however, the Bective defence were coming out on top and working some well-taken scores of their own. Midfielder Niall Farrell kicked a wonderful score towards the end of the half and followed this up with a free to leave 4 between the sides at the half-time interval.

Half-time score – Nobber 0 – 4 (4) Bective 2 – 2 (8)

The Deesiders’ started the second half with intent with a well-taken point from Maynooth University student Conor Owens, followed by Farrell (3) finishing off some good team moves and kicking from placed balls when needed. There was a nice flow to the game with Bective making it difficult for the North Meath men and they kept the scoreboard ticking over on their end. Going into the final 15 minutes of play, the Navan men led by two (2 – 4 v 0 – 8).

In truth, the winning of the game was probably in the final quarter where Nobber outscored Bective 0 – 7 v 0 – 2. The injection of pace up front with Joe Tierney, Jojo Ogunbe, and Lorcan McEntee all made notable contributions to helping the black and ambers pick up their first win in this year’s competition. When called upon netminder Dary Hutchinson made crucial saves during the game and kicked an important 45 in the final quarter. Dean Halpin, the secondary school teacher kicked some nice scores towards the end to help drive the Nobber men to victory. Firefighter Farrell was on fire and top-scored for Martin Morgan’s charges on the night and finished off the scoring to make sure Nobber took the two points on offer.

Overall, Martin Morgan and his management team will be happy with their team’s second-half performance which showed good teamwork, resilience, and attitude throughout. Plenty to work on for the remainder of the league and leading into the championship campaign in August.

Next up for Nobber is an away fixture v Clan Na nGael on Saturday, June 15 at 4 PM.
