June 08, 2024

Curraha's Seamus Hogan

Curraha 0-12  Moynalty 1-11

Curraha made the long journey north on Friday evening the 8th of June for a meeting with Moynalty in Round 7 of the PMC Physiotherapy Division 9 League. Played on a fine Summer's evening in Moynalty GFC, Stephen Dawson got the game underway at 8pm.

Both teams would have plenty of space to play open football as the game was played with 13 aside. Curraha made a fine start with Sean Ronan converting a fine free after 4 minutes of play. Conor Joyce doubled Curraha's lead a minute later when he finished off a fine team move and converted off his right foot. Moynalty responded with a point of their own after 7 minutes of play. Curraha went through a brilliant period of dominance for the next 15 minutes of play with them hitting 5 points without reply. The first of the 5 scores came from Ben Heagney with a super point from play. Seán Ronan got the next 2 points both coming from play in the 15th minute and 21st minute to give Curraha a 4 point lead with 9 minutes remaining in the half. Curraha weren't finished here though with Brian Joyce extending Curraha's lead with a fine point from play. Curraha's goalie Matthew Brennan came out into the mid field area and caught a great Moynalty kick out. He found Jamie Fewer with a great kick pass who converted to leave 6 between the teams. Moynalty did get the last point of the first half with a fine point from play.

Half time: Curraha 0-7  Moynalty 0-2

The second half began with Moynalty getting the first point of the half from a free after 3 minutes of play. Ben Heagney sent over the point of the day for Curraha from 45 meters out from play in the 5th minute of the second half. Moynalty then hit a purple patch of their own with their first team players coming to the fore and they scored 4 unanswered points to leave a point between the teams with 20 minutes remaining. Curraha got a vital point in the 14th minute from Séamus Hogan from a free. Again Moynalty responded with a point from a free to leave a point between the teams with 10 minutes remaining. Curraha were under a lot of pressure with Moynalty fortunate to be able to bring on fresh legs but Curraha still kept fighting and Brian Joyce who originally turned the ball over continued his run and received the ball back and popped his shot over the bar to leave 2 between the teams. Moynalty again responded with a point from play. Curraha kept trying to push clear and Seán Ronan fired over a point from a free with 7 minutes left in the half. Curraha packed the defence for the final 5 minutes but Moynalty found a way through the defence and were awarded a penalty which was converted to put Moynalty a point up. Curraha weren't giving up though and Seán Ronan once again responded with a free to level the game in injury time. Unfortunately for Curraha Moynalty got the final 2 points of the game and ran out winners by 2 points.

A very good performance from the Curraha lads who were down a number of players since the last game against Carnaross where they came up just short also. However the lads played some brilliant football for large parts of this game and can take great positives heading into the next game against Longwood on Tuesday the 18th of June in Joe McDermott Park Curraha with an 8pm throw in time.

Curraha: Matthew Brennan, PJ McMahon, Michael John Lavin, Seán Ronan 0.05 (0.03F), Ian Battersby, Séamus Hogan 0.01F, Conor Joyce 0.01, Brian Joyce 0.02, Jamie Fewer 0.01, Ben Heagney 0.02, Aidan McLarnon, Shea O’Connor, Tadgh O ‘Sullivan
