FL Div 3: Goals prove decisive

June 07, 2024

Kilmainham's Michael Hoey

Kilmainham 1-12, Dunderry 3-13

A perfect evening for football. A big well done to our pitch committee as the pitch was in Kilmainham was in pristine condition for our round 8 division 3 league clash against Dunderry on Thursday 6th June 2024.

These two sides had met earlier in the year in the Tailteann Cup with Dunderry coming out on top by a point. This match started off at a quick pace. Dunderry hit the first two scores of the first half and followed this up with a goal after only 4 minutes. Kilmainham got their first score from the boot of Michael Hoey after 6 minutes of play. Dunderry hit the next 2 points. Conor Kilgallen then claimed a mark and kicked a good point, this was followed up by a point by Dylan Morgan. Dunderry then hit a second killer goal on 25 minutes. A quick one two, which was finished to the net as Dean Peppard tried his best to keep it out. Two more points from frees from Dunderry left them in a commanding lead at half time. Despite playing some very good football in the first half the lads left themselves with a mountain to do in the second half.

Half Time Score: Kilmainham 0-3, Dunderry 2-6

Andy Arkins hit our first point of the second half as we looked to chip away at a strong Dunderry lead. Just as we were beginning to get some momentum. Dunderry scored their 3rd goal of the match. An attempt for a point came back off the crossbar and the ball fell kindly for the Dunderry forward who reacted quickest to finish to the net. Dunderry smelt blood and another goal looked bound for the Kilmainham net only for full back Harry Newman to foul the Dunderry forward in the square. Stephen Coogan stepped up but dragged his penalty to the left and wide. Kilmainham had nothing to lose at this stage as the game was effectively over but to their credit they drove at the Dunderry defence and looked to put some respectability on the scoreboard. Michael Hoey showing great leadership, stepping up to the plate with some excellent free’s in an all-round very good performance. It was great to see him back playing well and after a tough few months with injury. Larry Morgan hit a good point from play on 9 minutes. Dean Peppard pulled off a fine save on 10 minutes. Ger Morgan had a great chance to find the Dunderry net after a great team move but missed the target. Dunderry despite being under more pressure in the second half were able to keep the scoreboard kicking over with Coogan duly obliging with some straightforward frees. Kilmaiham held Dunderry to only 3 points from play in 60 minutes, but conceded 10 points from free’s in very scoreable positions. Terence Daly made a big contribution on his introduction, scoring 1-1 in the space of 3minutes as the game headed for the full time. Dunderry ran out deserving winners on the night as they took their chances at key moments in the match.

A frustrating night for our lads. Despite paying some very good football on the night they were left to rue the concession of 3 goals at vital moments in the game, which ultimately decided this encounter. There were plenty of positives with a high success rate on kick outs won, turnovers won and a higher level of intensity all around the pitch. Our lads need to keep their heads up and roll up their sleeves with 3 matches remaining in the league. Our next league match will be against Kilbride in Kilbride, details to be confirmed.
