St. Vincents Paddy Arnold

Football League Division 3 Round 5

Donaghmore/Ashbourne 0-09 St. Vincent’s 0-09

St Vincent travelled the short distance to Ashbourne to take on table toppers Donaghmore/Ashbourne in the fifth round of their league campaign.

It was the home side who got the score board ticking early with three unanswered points in the opening 10 minutes of play. All scores coming from frees. Michael McIvor tried to settle the Ardcath man when he kicked their opening score with a pointed free in the twelfth minute. Ashbourne’s men sought to punish St. Vincent’s open defence with a goal in the twentieth minute, but it was disallowed by referee Padraic Coyle for a square ball. It was not to stop the home side though and they kicked a well-earned point from play in the follow up. St. Vincent’s saw out the first half reducing the deficit to just one between the teams. McIvor slotted over a well scored free and Dylan Kavanagh kicked the visitor’s first point from play in the 26th minute.

Half Time: Donaghmore/Ashbourne 0-04 St. Vincent’s 0-03

In the early stages of the second half both goalkeepers were put under some unwanted pressure, Donaghmore/Ashbourne keeper loosely gathered under a high ball kicked in by St. Vincent’s, while on the other side of the pitch Evan Connor was side stepped when Dylan Kavanagh blocked Ashbourne’s second goal chance.  A free for St. Vincent’s allowed McIvor to open the second half scoring for the visitors with a pointed free. Nigel Hand was not long behind when he kicked a well struck free to bring the visitors in front for the first time on a scoreboard of 0-04 to 0-05. Ashbourne however quickly cancelled this lead with a point from play bringing the teams level again. McIvor hit between the uprights to convert a Vincent’s free in the 42nd minute. But like the previous 45 minutes Ashbourne answered quickly with a point from play. And this continued into the latter half of the second half with both teams kicking tit for tat against each other, Ashbourne moved one ahead with a pointed free in the 53rd minute while McIvor pulled back with a pointed free of his own for the visitors. It was the home side who looked to finish the game off when they scored a close range free bringing them one ahead with minutes to go. But Paddy Arnold had other ideas and he fired the ball between the posts to bring the sides level just before the full-time whistle sounded.
