St. Michaels keeper Conor Gilsenan gains possession against Moynalvey

St. Michaels 0-13, Moynalvey 0-11

St. Michaels pulled out all the stops in a cracking game in the Deerpark in Carlanstown on Saturday evening last to pick up their first brace of points in this campaign after a truly magnificent battle.

Gearóid O'Malley and Cian McFadden kept the scoreboard ticking with five points apiece and with Conor Gilsenan putting in a man of the match display between the posts, he came up trumps with several point blank saves of shots destined for the back of the net to ensure St. Michaels collected all points on offer.

St. Michaels played into a stiff wind on the opening half, but that didn't affect the marksmanship of McFadden who split the posts from two placed balls in the opening five minutes, Moynalvey replied with two points of their own, one from play and one from a placed ball. Matthew Halpin put his side back in front at the start of the second quarter and McFadden made it a three point lead from two frees. Moynalvey rallied with a brace before Brian O'Reilly tapped over for a two point interval lead in the first minute of injury time, 0-6 to 0-4.

Four unanswered points in the opening 10 minutes of the new half for wind assisted Moynalvey didn't look good for St. Michaels, however a point apiece from Daniel Murphy and Gearóid O'Malley steadied the ship for them but these scores were cancelled out almost immediately by the visitors. St. Michaels regrouped and the points flowed over the crossbar from O'Malley and McFadden to go back in front in the 57th minute. Moynalvey pressed all the way to the finish line but their persistance in going for goals didn't help their cause as they couldn't breach the goals guarded by the excellent Conor Gilsenan and his back six who were all in top form. O'Malley split the posts for the final time in added time to make sure of the points.
