FL Div 2: Impressive Syddan secure first league win

April 15, 2024

Syddan's Daire Rowe

Syddan 1-15 St. Pats 1-12

On a windy and sunny Saturday evening, Syddan were looking to get their first win off their league campaign in round four of the league where they faced a strong St Pats side.

The game was evenly matched to start with, with each team having their fair share of possession. Both Syddan and St Pats won frees in front of the posts which were capatilized with ease. Syddan then stepped it up another gear with Michael Fedigan, Cathal Duff and Cormac Rowe hitting fine points from range. Syddan won a lot of frees throughout the first half and which were dispatched excellently by the accurate Ben Blakemore. The Syddan backline held strong all through the game and Pats found difficulty in breaking the defence. Moment before half time, Ben Blakemore hit a powerful effort off the crossbar which denied a Syddan goal. Half Time score with Syddan due to face a stiff breeze in the second period, Syddan 0-12 St Pats 0-06

St Pats now playing with the aid of the strong wind began to eat into Syddan’s lead however the impressive Paddy Balfe thundered through the centre of the St. Pat’s defence to blast over a much needed fine score. Daire Rowe was a key man for Syddan throughout and kicked some good scores which included a fine individual effort to put Syddan six points up with ten minutes to go. Pats replied with three quick points heading into the final minutes of added time, but the drama was only starting as there was nine minutes of additional time left to play. Syddan broke quickly on a counter attack with Daire Rowe carrying the ball at pace who slipped a pass into Mark Fedigan who blasted the ball off the post into the top corner. Daire Rowe then kicked a free and it looked like Syddan were home and hosed. St Pats replied with a late goal but time ran out and the game was over.

Overall, it was a great team effort from Syddan and a great way to get their first win of the league, Syddan should take confidence into their next game when they play Oldcastle on Thursday the 25th of April in Syddan.
