Navan O’Mahony’s 1-07 St Ultan’s 1-07

Navan O’Mahony’s unbeaten run in Div 2 of the league clung by the skin of its teeth thanks to two late scores from Denise McGrath on the Trim Road on Saturday evening.

It was a low-scoring first half, although both sides will be left kicking themselves for missed opportunities. St Ultan’s opened the scoring after five minutes and followed up three minutes later, with both efforts from play.

McGrath raised her side’s first white flag on the ten-minute mark with a free, leaving only  point between the sides. Three minutes later, the visitors found the net to leave four between the sides. At the opposite end of the pitch, Charlie Murray brought it back to a one-point game when she beat the St Ultan’s netminder in the seventeenth minute.

This was to be the last score of the half, with both sides struggling to find the target in this period.

Five minutes into the second half, Navan O’Mahony’s had taken the lead for the first time following two impressive points from full forward Sarah Powderly

Neither side managed to break away, with never more than a couple of points between the sides. In the eleventh minute, the sides were level again with a St Ultan’s point before Tara Fay edged her side ahead once more.

Midway through the half, the visitors drew level again. Within sixty seconds, Hannah Heskin ran through to split the posts, giving Navan O’Mahony’s a one-point lead. By far the busiest period for the umpires, at the opposite end of the pitch St Ultan’s added two points within a minute to reclaim the lead. With ten minutes remaining, the visitors extended their lead to two.

With less than five minutes on the clock, McGrath pointed a free to leave it a single score game again. From the resulting kickout, McGrath won possession and split the posts, the last score of the game leaving the sides sharing the spoils.
