They say goals win matches and that proved to be the case in Paddy O’Brien Park on Friday evening, with a late goal from Hugo Fitzherbert needed to claim the two points on offer following a closely-fought game.

Donaghmore/Ashbourne pointed within three minutes before Navan O’Mahony’s took the lead in the eighth minute, when Darren Clarke lobbed the goalie from thirty yards to raise a green flag. Four minutes later, Ben Forde split the posts to extend the lead.

Thirteen minutes passed without score for either side, before Donaghmore/Ashbourne scored three points in a five-minute period to leave the sides level approaching half time. Into injury time, Shane Crosby kicked a late point to give the home side the advantage at the interval.

Half back Mark Murphy kicked an impressive point from play early in the second half to extend his sides lead but before five minutes had passed, the sides were level again following two points from play for the visitors.

Ben Forde put Navan O’Mahony’s ahead in the seventh minute but a Donaghmore/Ashbourne point within two minutes left the sides level again. Substitute Paul Cunningham found the net from play approaching the midway point of the half, but this was soon nullified by a penalty at the opposite end of the pitch.

In the next ten minute period, Donaghmore/Ashbourne looked set for victory, kicking three points while Crosby managed one for Navan O’Mahony’s in the same period. This wasn’t to be the case, however, and midfielder Hugo Fitzherbert burst through the visiting defence to reclaim the lead, which his side managed to hold until full time.
