Corn na Boinne: 'Hill' find that little bit extra

April 05, 2024

Meath Hill captain James Mooney receives the Corn na Boinne from Eamon Barry at Millbrook

Meath Hill 2-8 Oldcastle 0-10

Meath Hill needed extra time to see off Oldcastle and claim the Corn na Boinne title played at Millbrook.

Meath Hill and Oldcastle battled hard on Wednesday evening in a contest where no quarter was given. Gary Breslin was in great form from the start as he bore holes in a miserly Oldcastle defence. Both teams traded scores with Cormac Sheehy and Jack Slavin to the fore with long range efforts .

Meath Hill would get a goal before half time as Breslin came out and foraged for the ball and decided to attack the Oldcastle goal, he slalomed between Olcastle defenders avoiding tackles to dispatch a right-footed effort to the Oldcastle net. Meath Hill went in at the break 1-3 to 0-4 in front. The second half followed the same pattern as the first as both teams traded scores.

The game would end a draw and extra-time would be an eventful affair with 3 Oldcastle players given black cards, one of which would result in a penalty. Meath Hill’s goalkeeper Dominic Yorke would smash the ball to the net and with only minutes remaining in extra-time Meath Hill had done enough to claim their second cup in a week.

A wonderful team effort.
