FL Div 3: Kilmainham pipped at the post

April 01, 2024

Kilmainham's Declan Mullen

Kilmainham 0-10, Ballivor 1-11

It was a lovely sunny evening in Kilmainham for our round 2 Div 3 A league match against Ballivor on 30th March 2024.

This was our second match of our league campaign, while it was Ballivor’s first league outing having had their opening round postponed. There is normally not much between these sides and this match was no different. Kilmainham had shipped 6 goals against Slane in the Tailteann Cup in mid-week and there was a real determination by the management and players not to see a repeat of that. Scores were hard to come by in the first half as the two teams defended in numbers. Larry Morgan had us up and running inside the first minute with an excellent point off his left on the run. Ballivor hit back with a free and then hit two from play. Dylan Morgan hit a point from play in the 12th minute and then followed this up with a free in 15th minute. Kilmainham then lost corner back Jamie O’ Sullivan to a shoulder injury in the 17th minute when he collided with Ballivor’s full forward Kevin McKeown. Ballivor hit another point from play in the 20th minute. Paddy Hennigan then decided to copy Larry Morgan’s earlier effort and hit a brilliant point on his left. The game was tight and it was point for point with a few wides by both sides in between. Dylan Morgan hit two from play and then pointed from a free to have us leading by the minimum at the break.

Half Time Score: Kilmainham 0-7, Ballivor 0-6.

The second half began with a reshuffle at the back for Kilmainham with full back Harry Newman departing the field due to injury. Seanie Mahon slotted in at full back. That substitution saw a return to action for Shane Morgan. Dylan Morgan hit a point from a free in the 16th minute and then hit another from play in the 20th minute. Ballivor then hit two from play. Declan Mullen ventured forward to kick a great point from play after a good one two with Dylan. Ballivor kicked a few wides under severe pressure from the Kilmainham defence. Mullen’s point had put us 4 points up with 5 minutes left on the clock. There was a lot of stoppages in the second half and there was sure to be at least five minutes of injury time added by ref Martin Dawson. Kilmainham were out on their feet with no fresh legs to call on from a depleted bench. They were struggling to get out of their own half. Ballivor reeled in the match to draw level, then a well taken Adam Gannon goal for Ballivor had them ahead in injury time, Ballivor then hit the last point of the match to run out 4-point winners. The result was a hard one to take for our lads who put on a brilliant hard-working display for the 60 plus minutes but ultimately got pipped at the post.

We now head for Ashbourne this Thursday night 4th April to face Donaghmore Ashbourne’s second team in round three of the league. Throw in is at 8pm. Thanks for the support for this match. See you all again on Thursday.
