Res Cup Div 3: Goals seal good win on the road for Oldcastle

February 24, 2024

Oldcastle's Keith Connell

Oldcastle 4-11, Meath Hill 0-12

It’s a long drive to Meath Hill no matter what road you go, but at least our senior lads made the journey worthwhile this morning, with a good win in the Reserve Cup.

A smashing goal from Louis Colleran got Oldcastle going, soon followed by a converted free from Ryan Kevin. Meath Hill levelled the match, but super work from Brian Hetherton secured the next ball on the sideline, and a lovely pass in to the waiting Ryan Kevin saw him also hit the back of the net! A foul on Josh Halpin saw Ryan convert. Mossy Flood worked hard to secure the next ball, and sent it upfield by way of Cillian Connell, on to Ben Grey, to Louis and in to Kyle Kavanagh who put her over the bar.

A Darren Hawdon intercept secured the next kickout, on to JP Purcell, to Conor Delaney, back to JP, on to Ben Grey, to Louis, to Josh and finally to Ryan Kevin for another point. Sean Maxwell’s next kickout found Darren Hawdon, on via Mossy Flood, to Cillian Connell, to Josh, to Conor Delaney and finally to Kyle Kavanagh who took a lovely score. Another point from Louis and a penalty taken by Keith Connell saw the half-time score read Oldcastle 3-06, Meath Hill 0-07.

The second-half was slow to get going, but Oldcastle kept the pressure on, with Fionn McCabe and James Gibney keeping their men well under wraps. Ben Grey opened up the Meath Hill defence with good runs, and added on a fine point and a well-finished goal, Stephen Tierney also putting her between the posts. Meath Hill just couldn’t get back into the game at all, and the lads’ fine performance left the final score Oldcastle 4-11, Meath Hill 0-12.

The next match sees the lads take on Ballinlough on Thursday evening.
