Meath 2-13 Louth 1-7
A dominant third quarter saw Meath set up an O’Byrne Cup semi final meeting with Longford after this six point win over Louth before a bumper crowd at Ashbourne.
Tom Jackson put Louth on the scoreboard first but Meath dominated the next 20 minutes and raced into a 1-4 to 0-2 lead. Jack Flynn got the Royals first score, Matthew Costello followed suit before Aaron Lynch found the back of the Louth net. Costello added a brace to push the home side five in front with ten minutes to go. Louth were back in the game soon after with a Dan Corcoran goal and were level with three minutes remaining with points from Wayne Campbell and Jonathan Commins. Colm O’Rourke’s charges recovery from that mini scoring blitz and went in at the break in front 1-5 to 1-4 thanks to an Aaron Lynch pointed free.
Both sides made substitutions at the break but it was Meath who got off to a flyer. After a great run Cathal Hickey was fouled inside the square and Costello dispatched the penalty for goal number two. Points from Sean Coffey and substitutes Adam McDonnell and Ruairi Kinsella (2) put the Royals eight points ahead.
Louth’s opening score of the second half came in the 19th minute from Sean Marry. Meath made sure that there was no come back this time around and tagged on three points from substitutes Cathal Finnegan, Daire Rowe and Kinsella. Keith Curtis got his name on the scoresheet before the final whistle as Meath set up a semi final meeting with Longford next weekend.
