Intermediate camogie final: O'Mahonys run out of time

O'Mahony's Rebecca Coen in a race for possession during the Meath Intermediate Camogie Championship final at Trim

Navan O’Mahony’s 2-09 Trim 2-10

Sport can be cruel sometimes and it doesn’t come much crueller than losing a final by a single point. A comeback looked to be on the cards in the second half but Navan O’Mahony’s just ran out of time and Trim claimed the day.

Navan O’Mahony’s were the first to leave a mark on the scoreboard when Isabel O’Connor burst through the Trim defence to find the net in the fourth minute. Three minutes later, Lizzy Brennan extended the lead with a 45, soon nullified by a point worked by Trim from the resulting puck-out.

The four point lead was restored on the ten-minute mark when Brennan converted a free, but a period of Trim dominance was to follow. Two scores in as many minutes left two points between the sides. A high ball into the square looked dangerous and after a battle for possession, the Trim forward pulled it to the net to give the home side the lead.

Within the next five minutes, they had extended this lead to five points with a goal and a point. Another goal looked to be a certainty only for two rapid saves from netminder and captain Mags Tompkins. By the twenty-fifth minute, Trim had added another three points to put themselves eight points ahead.

Navan O’Mahony’s added a point in the 25th minute via O’Connor, which Trim soon responded to. The final score of the half came from play from Brennan, unlucky not to go under instead of over the bar with three players on the ground in the square following a scrimmage for possession

Navan O’Mahony’s 1-04 Trim 2-08

Navan O’Mahony’s knew they needed a big second half if they were to have any chance of clawing the game back. The opening ten minutes of the half saw them claim a vast majority of the possession, although they struggled to convert this into scores. Three wides came in as many minutes immediately following the throw-in.

What was almost the first score of the half was prevented when the Trim netminder prevented an Izzy Kinsella shot from going over the bar. The first score then came with almost twelve minutes on the clock when Ailbhe Leahy split the posts, followed quickly by a point for Jorja Keogh.

Trim added their first score of the half after sixteen minutes, which Keogh responded to almost immediately. From the resulting puckout, Claire Mallon won possession and split the posts to leave four points between the sides.

On the twenty-minute mark an Annie Hogan shot looked to be dropping short, until the Trim defender fumbled it in the air and it ended in the net to put a single point between the sides and set the large crowd buzzing.

Trim gave themselves what turned out to be a crucial insurance point within a minute of the goal to leave two points between the sides. With five minutes remaining, it was back to a one-point game following a Brennan free. Try as they might, Navan O’Mahony’s just could not get the score they needed under pressure from the home side.

A number of possessions resulted in clearances from the Trim defence or went narrowly wide and ultimately the referee’s whistle came just too soon for Navan O’Mahony’s. Congratulations to Trim and best of luck as they represent the county in Leinster next week.
