Navan O’Mahony’s 1-07 Boardsmill 2-07

Navan O’Mahony’s were unlucky to come out second best in this Div 2 encounter of the football league, short a number of players on various county duties. It turned out to be a close but low-scoring encounter.

Almost a quarter of an hour had passed on the clock and the umpires flags remained firmly nestled on the ground. When the need for use first arose, it was down the Navan O’Mahony’s end with Boardsmill registering the first point of the game. Two minutes later, they added another point from play before converting a free to leave it three points to nothing.

As Navan O’Mahony’s tried to recover the deficit, a foul close to goal saw a penalty being awarded. Although Megan Collins didn’t manage to convert, she was alert and managed to slot in the rebound, drawing the sides level once again after twenty minutes. Four minutes later, Sophia Fitzherbert kicked an impressive free to put her side in the lead for the first time.

Twenty seven minutes into the game, Boardsmill drew level with a point and it looked like it would remain that way at the interval. A Collins point in injury time put the Brews Hill outfit to the fore again but a late Boardsmill goal gave them a two point edge at the break.

Seven minutes into the second half, Boardsmill had added to their lead and were now four ahead. A Collins free reduced the deficit to a kick of the ball again but Boardsmill responded almost instantly with a point to leave four in it again.

With twelve minutes remaining on the clock, they found the Navan O’Mahony’s net again to leave Phil Fay’s side facing an uphill seven point battle. To their credit, Navan O’Mahony’s never gave up and scored the last three points of the game, two from Collins and one from midfielder Hannah Heskin but unfortunately for the Navan side, time ran out.
