Premier FC Div 4: Opening round defeat for Gaels

March 28, 2023

Luke Jennings Blackhall Gaels

Blackhall Gaels 1-6 Oldcastle 1-8

Blackhall welcomed Oldcastle to Batterstown on Sunday morning for the opening round of the Premier Championship. Having been defeated in the final last year, the Gaels would have high hopes of returning to that stage and getting over the line in 2023. Those hopes were dealt a blow however as Oldcastle had the better of the home side in this encounter.

Blackhall started well and with the wind held a commanding 5-2 lead at the break with Tommy Clarke, Luke Jennings, Charlie Mulligan and Kevin O'Keane leading the attack for Blackhall.

Oldcastle came to life in the second half and reeled Blackhall in on the scoreboard. Blackhall responded however and they netted early in the second half when Jennings got on the end of a Tom Murphy ball across the goal to palm it in. The visitors pushed on again and with the wind at their backs and having got back to within three points they struck a killer blow with 10 minutes left. They moved the ball the length of the field to net their own goal to tie the game. Oldcastle finished stronger and chipped in two more points before the finish to settle matters.

Special mention to the grounds team who had Batterstown available for the game given the week of rain that was.
