Hugo Fitzherbert Navan O'Mahonys

Navan O’Mahony’s 1-16 Boardsmill 0-09

Navan O’Mahony’s adult football season started in earnest on Saturday night in Paddy O’Brien Park, when the second string faced Boardsmill in the opening round. Building from a good start, Damien Moran and Rory Maguire’s charges were in control almost from the outset.

Jack Bellamy opened the scoring after two minutes, with a dinger of a point from play. A mark won by full forward Jack McConnell shortly afterwards was duly converted, before he slotted one over from play only seconds later. After eight minutes, following a score from Hugo Fitzherbert and another from McConnell, Navan O’Mahony’s led by five points to no score.

A point from midfielder Jack Flynn added to his sides tally in the eleventh minute and it was exactly midway through the half before the visitors troubled the white flag at their end. After twenty six minutes had been played, there was once again five between the sides with Boardsmill kicking two scores from play while McConnell did likewise in the same period.

A mark won by McConnell was passed into the corner to Jack Quinn, who saw the man in the better position and duly passed. The player in question was Fitzherbert who made no mistake in front of goals and pushed his side eight clear. A point from McConnell just before the interval left nine points between the sides.

Boardsmill managed to get off to a quicker start in the second half, splitting the posts within the opening minute. They struggled to eat into the Navan O’Mahony’s lead however, which was bolstered by two McConnell frees from either side.

After ten minutes passed without a flag being raised, three points in quick succession from Bellamy and Shane McCarthy put thirteen points between the sides entering the final ten minutes. A free from Boardsmill broke the momentum but there was too much between the sides to have any impact on the game. Substitute Adam McEvoy was denied a goal by a great save by the ‘Mill netminder and had to settle for a point a couple of minutes later.

In the final few minutes, Boardsmill kicked two more points and looked a certainty to rattle the Navan O’Mahony’s net. This wasn’t to be however, thanks to a brave save by goalkeeper Colm Honan who managed to block the shot and subsequently clear the danger. A McCarthy point deep in injury time was the final score of the game. An away trip to Drumconrath awaits next Sunday.
