Tailteann Shield: Worthwhile journey for Slane

February 13, 2023

Slane's Tadhg Martyn

Carnaross 2-10 Slane 2-16

This was Slane’s first competitive game of the year, and they made the journey to worthwhile.

Slane’s first game under the new management of Des Teeling made the perfect start with the impressive Podge McGowan registering the first score after only 20 seconds of play. Carnaross didn’t allow Slane to develop and were back level within a minute.  McGowan put Slane back in front with his and Slane’s second of the game after some fast and slick inter changes in the middle third. The men in blue were controlling proceedings and dictating the pace of the game with fast and direct movement and they increased their lead even further with points from Alan Harding and McGowan once more.

Carnaross did manage to stay in touch with their second of the game from a free on 14 minutes.  The game was then played out around the middle third for the next 5 minutes as both teams should some early season handling and kicking errors.  It was to be Slane who would emerge from that patch with superb score off the left boot of Conor Forde which was soon followed up by a powerful drive for McGowan’s 4th of the morning.  Carnaross kept plugging away and managed to never let Slane get too far in front as they kicked over an excellent 45 which was closely followed by two further scores from a free and open play.

Half Time: Carnaross 0-5 Slane 0-7

The second half started exactly how Slane had wanted to, regaining control and pace of the game and it didn’t take long for Alan Harding to register his second of the match.  Two minutes into the second half and it was the score that his play deserved as Matt Kealy swung over his first point in adult football.  This was the beginning of a purple patch for Slane as Podge registered his 5th before Kealy kicked off a placed ball from somewhere near Kells!  Carnaross kept themselves interested with another pointed free before a superb Slane moved was finished off by Conor Forde to raise the first green flag of the day. Slane and Forde had their tails up now as he swung over another point to push the Boynesiders even further ahead. It was now time for Danny Carolan to get in on the act to ensure the starting full forward line all scored from open play. Carnaross tagged on another score before McGowan latched onto a superb take by sub Eanna Mooney to drive to the back of the Carnaross net. Kealy then added another to his tally before the safe hands of Mooney claimed a mark and popped over the resulting mark. The next five minutes will be of concern to management as the lads seem to switch off and allow Carnaross in for two sloppy goals which took the gloss off this win.  Slane did steady the ship and just before he was replaced with a few minutes remaining Harding kicked another superb point. As the clocked reached the 30-minute mark Slane made further changes before the Carnaross finished the scoring for the day.

Massive congratulations to our four debutants today: Alex Devin, Matthew Kealy, Oisin Martyn and Tadhg Martyn.

The game also finished with 3 brothers playing – Peter, Sean and Tadhg Martyn.

This was an impressive first out of the year for Slane, but there will be plenty to work on before welcoming Cortown to Slane next week.
