Blackhall Gaels 2-10 Bective 4-9

Blackhall Gaels suffered a second defeat in the Intermediate Football Championship on Sunday when they came up short against Bective in Dunsany.

Blackhall were forced into a number of changes from the previous round against St.Pats with the three Conors coming into the team, Delany, Forde and Duffy, Charlie Staunton and Tom Murphy. In the searing lunchtime heat it was Blackhall who struck first through Paul Kelly. The teams traded scores for the first 15 minutes as neither team were able to gain a significant advantage. At 4 points a piece and 21 minutes played Bective hit the back of the net, moments later a second goal for Bective was a hammer blow for the Gaels as they now found themselves trailing by 6 points having had most of the momentum beforehand. Bective would score twice more in the half to give themselves an 8 point lead at the break and leave Blackhall with a mountain to climb in the second half.

In terms of Mountains Croagh Patrick quickly became Mount Everest for Blackhall as inside the first minute of the restart the net was rattled again. Bective, now leading 3-6 to 0-4 should have closed up shop but in fairness to Blackhall they dug in and started to reel in Bective. Points from Paul Kelly and Tadhg Brosnan gave Blackhall a lift but on 36 minutes Conor Duffy finished off a move with a goal to bring the game back to 6 points. When Brosnan and Duffy pointed again on 40 minutes the lead was down to 4 and Blackhall had all the momentum. Bective, now some 18 minutes without a score looked somewhat unlikely to stop this Blackhall comeback but they did just that and restored their lead with their fourth and final goal on 49 minutes to take the sting out of the Blackhall fightback.

The teams traded scores again and with just under 10 minutes to play the Cannistown outfit were 4-7 to 1-9 ahead. Tadhg Brosnan pointed a free for Blackhall to bring it back to 6 points but Bective again countered. The final chapter to this enthralling second half was when Blackhall were awarded a penalty which Paul Kelly duly dispatched but it was too little too late for Gaels and their comeback. Bective scored the last point of the game to see off the Kilcloon/Batterstown men 4-9 to 2-10.

For Bective it was a second win in Group C with Blackhall still without a win. Blackhall now turn their attention to Dunshaughlin in two weeks while Bective enjoy a Bye in Round 4.
