Dunshaughlin 1-16   Kilmainham 1-7

It was a blustery showery evening in Walterstown for Dunshaughlin’s opening game of the 2022 Intermediate Championship.

Kilmainham played with the assistance of the strong wind in the first half but it was Dunshaughlin who got the first score within 30 seconds of the throw in from corner forward Luke Mitchell. Kilmainham equalised in the third minute with a point from corner forward Dylan Morgan and then took the lead through a beautiful Mickey Newman point in the 6th minute. Top scorer for Dunshaughlin Mathew Costello got his first point in the eight minute to level the game. Throughout the game there were tremendous battles at midfield especially for the high ball with Conor Gray for Dunshaughlin and Barry Lynch, two big men showing great fielding skills. Kilmainham’s top scorer Mickey Newman put them back in front from a free in the 14th minute, Newman had earlier tried scoring from a side-line ball but it just went narrowly wide. Ruairi Kinsella got his first point for Dunshaughlin less than a minute later after initially been involved in turning over the ball from the Kilmainham kickout.  On the quarter hour Dunshaughlin had retaken the lead, a lead they never relinquished from a very difficult free into the wind from Mitchell. Kinsella added another lovely point a minute later and Mitchell made it double scores (0-6 to 0-3) when he converted another free in the 21st minute. The weather conditions were getting worse as the half drew to a close with the wind getting stronger and rain pelting down and Kilmainham did score two points from play before the half time break courtesy of Mickey Newman.

Thankfully the rain had stopped by the time the game resumed and straight from the throw in Dunshaughlin scored a point from the hard-working corner forward Aaron Murphy.  Dunshaughlin now playing with the wind on their back gradually started to pull away from Kilmainham and in the period from halftime to the 50th minute scored 0-7 without reply to lead 0-13 to 0-5, some lovely scores in there from Costello (4, 2f), Mitchell (f) and Kinsella. The most exciting incident during that period was when Dunshaughlin almost had a goal when Conor Gray broke through only for his shot to be denied by a great save from Dean Peppard, the referee had given advantage as Gray was fouled when he was taken his shot and the ball was brought back for a Dunshaughlin free which Costello converted. Kilmainham were getting hard to get the ball out of their own half but in the 53rd minute following a wide from Dunshaughlin, Kilmainham worked the ball up the field from their kickout to score a well taken goal from Paul Farrelly, which was their first score of the 2nd half. It was a very short-lived revival because from the resultant Dunshaughlin kickout the ball worked it ways up to Costello who with his neat footwork evaded Kilmainham backs and struck beautifully to the net for the Dunshaughlin goal just 30 seconds after Kilmainham’s. It was game set and match to Dunshaughlin and left the score 1-13 to 1-5 with six minutes remaining. In the time remaining Dunshaughlin added three more points, Kinsella (56th), Mitchell (59th) and captain Niall Murphy (62nd) minutes and Newman got two more points (28th & 30th minutes) for Kilmainham. 

A workmanlike performance from Dunshaughlin who play St. Pats in the next round in Ashbourne on Friday August 5th at 7:30pm. St. Pats will present a stiff test as they lead the table and are coming off the back of two big wins.
