O'Mahonys Pat Nolan moves in to block Harry Cottrell (Trim) during the Billy Byrne Cup semi final

Navan O’Mahony’s 2-09 Trim 0-17

Navan O’Mahony’s poor showing in the first half left them with too much to do in the second in the semi final of the Billy Byrne Cup on Thursday evening. In spite of a strong comeback, Trim’s cushion of the lead they built up in the first thirty minutes was enough to see them over the line.

The visitors started the scoring early on with a point to take the lead early on. Three fine points from Navan O’Mahony’s in a five-minute period saw them on a good footing, but these proved to be the only three scores of the half. Diarmuid Collins, Jack McConnell and Pat Nolan were the Brews Hill side’s scorers in this half.

Trim maintained consistency over the half, raising white flags at regular intervals. After eight minutes, they had brought the game back to a draw. Three further points from play pushed them into the lead and two frees towards the end of the half left five points between the sides at the interval.

Navan O’Mahony’s 0-03 Trim 0-08

A strong start to the second half from Navan O’Mahony’s saw this five point lead nullified, with Nolan scoring 1-02 in a ten minute period. Trim edged ahead again in the 11th minute with a converted free before Barry McEvoy rattled the Trim net to put Navan O’Mahony’s ahead for the first time since the 5th minute of the game.

A Collins point extended the lead to three points but Trim enjoyed a strong finish to the game and nullified this lead with three well taken points, two of which came from play. A point from Niall McKeigue in the twentieth minute was Navan O’Mahony’s last score of the game with Trim managing to split the posts on a couple more occasions, securing their place in the final of the competition.
