Premier FC Div 9: Drums play the Generation Game

April 18, 2022

Drumconrath's Chris Tighe

Drumconrath 0-10 Trim 0-7

In Round 1 Drumconrath were glad to field in a 2nd team Championship for the 1st time in many years, cue Round 2 and in a game for the ages in more ways than one the North Meath lads went one better and won Round 2 in this grade.

It was a mighty performance in which the Club fielded 2 sets of Fathers and Sons on their starting 15 in the everlasting Ollie McMahon and his son James along with Christopher Tighe and his offspring Aaron.

Drums continue to give as many players games as possible and again only fielded 2 players from last year's 1st team along with 4 players in their 1st year playing Adult Football. The Red and Whites gave  a 1st start to recently transferred Ben Garvey who can be happy with his 1st game in Meath football.

This week pride of place must go to Steve Elebert who made a return to the Drums playing squad after coming out of retirement at the fighting fit age of 62 and whose excellent kickouts and steady head along with keeping a clean sheet contributed handsomely to this victory.

Drumconrath found the going tough against this spirited Trim side and it wasn't until the 20th minute before the home side bothered the score keeper as Thomas Duff fired over. Trim had pointed 3 times at that stage and when Trim born Keith Sheerin of Refereeing fame added a 2nd Drums point just on half time the sides retired for a well earned half time break with Trim leading 0-3 to 0-2.

Duff soon leveled the game and Aaron Farrelly edged Drumconrath ahead as hopes for a win increased but Trim responded well and 2 points from them had the visitors leading by 1 point at the 3/4 stage.

The introduction of Oran Brady and Darragh Dunne seen Drums push on as corner back Johnny Lynch leveled the game and points from Brady and Farrelly pushed the home side 2 clear. Dunne then got in on the act and pointed twice in quick succession but Trim where determined to have a say and narrowed the gap as they added two further points to leave some nervous moments for the home side but with Elebert's steading influence the defence held strong and it was left to late substitute and Penalty Scoring Hero from last November in his 1st run out of 2022, Jamie Myles to pop over the last score for a memorable Drumconrath win as Aaron Farrelly, Thomas Duff and Jamie O'Neill where outstanding for the home side.
