Paul Curran returns to family roots

Dublin's Paul Curran

Dunshaughlin Men’s team manager Richie Kealy is pleased to advise that Paul Curran will be joining his management team in a coaching role.

Paul has strong connections with Dunshaughlin. His father Noel is a club legend who made his underage debut in 1958 and went on to play at all levels for our club.  Although he moved to Dublin and raised his family there, Noel chose to continue travelling back to train and play for the Black & Amber.  He went on to win a Meath JFC medal in 1967 and a Meath IFC title in 1977 with Dunshaughlin.

In a very proud moment for our club Noel became the first man from Dunshaughlin to win an All-Ireland medal with Meath, when he played full forward on the Meath team that beat Cork in the 1967 All-Ireland Final. Noel had that uncanny knack of being able to kick a score with his back to goal, a wonderful all round footballer. He was Guest of Honour at the 2011 Meath county final which Dunshaughlin contested, and in 2013 he received his much deserved Dunshaughlin Hall of Fame award.  Noel sadly passed away later that year, but he is very fondly remembered in the parish as a true gent and greatly admired around the county as one of the finest players of his generation.

Paul has strong memories childhood memories coming out from Dublin to watch his father play for Dunshaughlin. He is naturally very proud of his father’s achievements, and he was delighted to be asked by Richie to help out with the current group of players proudly wearing the Black & Amber.

Paul played for the Thomas Davis club with whom he won three consecutive Dublin Senior Football titles and reached the All-Ireland Club Final. He was one of the best half backs of the game and an influential part of the Dublin team that beat Tyrone in the 1995 All-Ireland Final. He is among a small group of players in the history of the game to win three All-Stars and a Footballer of the Year award. Paul also has two National League titles and six Leinster titles to his name.

Since finishing as a player Paul has enjoyed very considerable success as a coach and manager.  He was part of Jim Gavin’s backroom team with the Dublin U21 side.  He has held various high profile managerial positions, including winning the 2012 Dublin Senior Football Championship as manager of Ballymun Kickhams, who he then led on to a Leinster title and an All-Ireland Final.  He subsequently managed the Clannna nGael club in Roscommon to a county title and morerecently he has been manager of Cuala, who he managed to back-to-back Dublin Senior 2 titles.

There’s another connection between Paul and Dunshaghlin. Paul managed Richie when Richie played with DIT in 90’s. The two men marked each other when Meath played Dublin in the 2001 Leinster Final. Both men have significant mutual respect for each other and Paul is very much looking forward to supporting Richie and our first team players this year.
