The late Dessie Gorman

The late Dessie Gorman makes a presentation to GAA President Sean McCague at the Simonstown pitch opening

It is with a heavy heart that we tell readers about the passing of Simonstown's Dessie Gorman. Dessie was Honorary Club President at the time of his death.

Dessie, a native of Dunmoe on the Drogheda Road out of town, was with the Navan parish unit right from its infant steps back in 1965. He has probably served the club in every official capacity since, this involves two stints as Chairman.

Dessie Gorman was a man without football enemies. In his own quiet way he knew everyone associated with the club, please remember that the number of those active in Simonstown is faily high  and rarely missed an adult match. Usually and more so in recent times, travelling alongside his son Barry. Always wearing that club tie.

An immaculate dresser, you never rattled Dessie. A few seconds of action on his pipe and back he would come with a calm, accurate assessment to any dispute or plan of action or an answer to a query posed.

Dessie was really at home while representing the club at County Board meetings. An articulate speaker and debater, he always got his point across, calm and allied to a sense of politeness.

His son Barry continued that G.A.A. involvement. He too has served Simonstown in a number of official capacities and has acted as County Board PRO.

Dessie worked a good portion of his life from Dundalk and we are told that the football talk on his trips over to the North East with his old companion, the late Larry Kearns of Slane and Seneschalstown fame, would make a good modern day podcast. Every kick of the ball from the previous Sunday or night, every dirty stroke, every dubious decision etc was discussed over and over again.

Farewell old friend. Your help bringing those players back and forth to their school in Dundalk during that long season of 1988 was a huge help in winning that years Minor Championship and Under 17 League, Simonstown's first ever in the grades.

Your like will not be seen again walking the green sod of Simonstown.

Ar dheis De go raibh a anam.
