Blackhall Gaels 0-12 St.Patricks 0-9
Blackhall Gaels staked a claim as contenders for the 2021 Intermediate Championship when they came through a stern test by St.Patricks on Sunday morning in Kilbride.
The teams had met earlier in the year with Pats coming out on top in a Corn Na Boinne fixture in much better conditions. The mid-morning dew was still evident at an overcast yet warm Kilbride which meant for greasy, soggy conditions that both teams had to come to terms with.
Blackhall hit the ground running with Dermot Carty getting the first point of the game, Blackhall looked to have started brighter but a number of missed, scorable opportunities could have proved costly as St.Pats got a grip on proceedings and eased themselves into the game. Alan Nestor (2), Kealan Forde and Tadhg Brosnan all pointed inside the first 30 minutes for Blackhall as the teams were level at the break with 5 points apiece.
Blackhall upped the tempo in the third quarter and found themselves ahead 8-5 before Pats came back into the game. Nestor and Carty again providing for the Gaels. At 10-6 Pats threw their lot at Blackhall but couldn’t get past a robust defensive line for a goal which they needed with Dan Carty, Hugh Smith and Shane Whitty holding firm in the full back line for Blackhall. Pats pushed on again and got the score back to 10-9 but two scores sublime points from Tadhg Brosnan and Paul Kelly out of the right-hand wing pushed Blackhall ahead again 12 – 9, stalling the momentum of the Stamullen men and that’s how it finished.
Blackhall Gaels now sit top of the table in Group A with four points and take on Bective in their last group game. Pats sit on 1 point and await Nobber in round 3.
