Donaghmore Ashbourne 0-13 Navan O'Mahony's 1-11
This was always going to be a tight match and proved that way when both sides had to fight very hard for every ball during the opening round of the Meath SFC at Dunshaughlin.
Navan got off to a better start and scored 2 points from play before young Evan Quinn got a point on the board running from wing back. It was level after 8 minutes with Kevin Fenton firing over. Sean Curran made it 3 points each after 10 minutes but Navan were ahead at the first water break by 1 point. Michael Deegan, Dylan and Leo Reilly all kicked points to keep the score board ticking over but Navan added their own points to make it level. Andy Colgan pulled off a save on 28 minutes right in the goalmouth to stop a certain goal. Good work from our backs, McGovern, Redmond, O'Donnell, Boland, Quinn and in particular Conor Carton stemmed the flow from Navan O'Mahony's to leave it a drawn match at half time. We lost McGovern with a hamstring 25 minutes into the match and there was a shuffle when Andrew Tormey was introduced.
Tormey won the throw in at the start of 2nd half and after good work the ball was given into Stephen Carton who was fouled about 14 yards out and Deegan put over the resulting free. It was to be Navan O'Mahony's purple patch as they notched up 1-5 to Don/Ash 2 points from frees in the 3rd quarter. Stephen Bray and Dougie Dillon got most of those scores and seemed to be unstoppable but the water break seemed to stem their dominance. Don/Ash came out like they were meant business and did not want to loose this match and they put in a fine performance with long balls into Tormey on the edge of the box which resulted in points from Stephen Carton, Leo Reilly Michael Deegan (free) Andy Colgan (free) and Andrew Tormey. Navan O'Mahony's did not score again after the 2nd water break with a great save again from Colgan. Unfortunately for the men in green they just could not get that elusive point to give them a share of the spoils. With time running out Daragh O'Sullivan had won a ball on the right hand side of the pitch and worked his way across to put himself in position to be able to kick off his favoured left boot but for this young player it just wasn't meant to be and it went marginally wide. This was not the loosing of the game because we had plenty of opportunities during the game but just didn't take our opportunities.
Don/Ash will face tougher times with Ratoath and Dunshaughlin ahead in the next few weeks.
