St Ultan's GFC pay tribute as Ger Doherty and Elaine Duffy retire

June 25, 2021

St. Ultans Ger Doherty, Elaine Duffy and Mary Coyne warm up before the 2016 Meath Ladies SFC against Boardsmill at Pairc Tailteann.

Over the years we’ve been very lucky to have some fantastic role models play Gaelic Games in our community. However, very few have been as inspirational and influential as Ger Doherty and Elaine Duffy. Sadly, as they say, all good things must come to an end. Both Ger and Elaine have recently announced their respective retirements from club football.

St Ultans GFC could not let the moment pass without acknowledging both ladies and the service they have given to both club and county, with such distinction, for over twenty years. Both kept many a scoreboard operator busy with their trusty left boots.

Ger and Elaine were part of a golden generation of ladies football in the parish. Elaine picked up a Leinster medal with Meath in her early playing days. While Ger had the privilege of becoming the second all-star from the parish when she won one in 2005 at right half forward.

St Ultans ladies were well represented when Meath came close to winning a league title in 2006, with no less than five Ultans stalwarts involved, Ger, Elaine, Katie O’Brien, Shauna Bennett and Elaine Lynch. This was the closest Ger and Elaine came to winning silverware together with Meath. However, they made up for that by winning multiple championships and leagues in the green and black.

To say they will leave a massive hole is an understatement but both have very willingly turned their attentions to the next generation in their club with Ger leading the u10 girls group for this season and Elaine over the u8 girls. The experience and knowledge they will bring to the roles can only be of huge benefit to the girls under their mentorship.

Both ladies continue to act as great leaders and examples for everyone involved with sport in the parish. They can regularly be seen running laps of Martry football pitch or racing with Bohermeen AC.

We in St Ultans GFC would like to wish them all the best in their retirements, we know they won’t be idle.

Thanks for the memories Ladies
