St. Ultans Mark Allen

St Ultans 1-15  St Brigids 2-8

St Ultans secured their place in the Junior semi final against Ballivor with a four point win over St Brigid's.

St Brigid's opened the scoring but a Mark Allen point drew Ultans level, they took the lead with an early goal in the second minute, Emmett Costello slipped the ball to Martin Dolan who drove at the Brigids defence and who unselfishly passed to Mark Allen to fist the ball to the net. Brigids responded with a point but 2 scores from play from Johnny Foster and Ronan Breslin left Ultans four points up at the water break. Brigids battled back well with a goal and a point but Ultans enjoyed their best spell of the match approaching half time with the scores from Mark Allen, Gearoid Rennicks, Adam Rogers and Ronan Breslin.

A Gearoid Rennicks free from distance extended Ultans lead to six but Brigids responded with three unanswered points. Mark Allen pointed from a free to leave four between the sides at the 2nd half water break. Another free from Mark Allen and a point from play from Johnny Foster left Brigids in need of a goal to keep their championship hopes alive. With five minutes to go Brigids hit the net and quickly followed with a point from play from Michael Flood. Ronan Breslin pointed from play before a late Rennicks free ensured Ultans would run out four point winners.

St. Brigids Report

A very surreal experience on Sunday morning as St Brigids lined out in an empty Pairc Tailteann in what was more or less a Championship quarter final. The match began with a respectfully observed minutes silence in memory of Teasie Blake, grandmother to starting forwards Joseph & Jack Blake, who had recently passed away.

This was an all to play for game, with the winning side looking at a semi final outing – and it was clear from the get go that both St Brigids and St Ultans were up for a fight. Within the opening two minutes Kevin Gilsenan had put the Brigids on the scoreboard, but St Ultans made their intentions known by quickly responding with subsequent scores of their own including an early goal and put themselves 4 points ahead. Scores from Padraig Plunkett, Stephen Browne, Joe Blake and a well placed goal from Kevin Gilsenan brought the two sides level; however St Ultans managed to pull away and ended the first half with a 5 point lead.

St Brigids entered the second half plagued with injuries from the initial 30 minutes which seen Michael Flood effectively working on one leg and Padraig unfortunately having to leave the pitch early after the second half begun after adding another point to his tally. With 22 minutes gone on the time, St Brigids found themselves 6 points down and it seemed as though all was lost. However, staying true to their  ‘never say die’ attitude the Ballinacree men put in some serious effort and an AJ Gilsenan goal lifted the Brigids spirits and brought some life back into the game. A following point from Flood brought the blues back to within 2 points of Ultans, however despite some gallant attempts, it was St Ultans who emerged victorious when the final whistle blew.
