Oldcastle 2-11, Drumbaragh 0-09
A much-less dramatic match in Moynalty awaited Oldcastle this evening, and after the Round 4 match here two weeks ago, it was a relief to get through unscathed and into the business end of the Intermediate Championship.
Terry Farrelly, who was the unfortunate provider of all the drama last time, was on hand to cheer on the lads tonight, and will happily make a full recovery! He was joined in the injury club by Ger Reidy, but the team that fielded were well able for the Drumbaragh outfit, and had six points on the scoreboard before the opposition took their first point, in the 23rd minute, adding a second soon after. Oldcastle retaliated from the Packie Kevin kick-out which found Paddy Gilsenan, he moved it on to the impressive Steven Lawless who found Dylan Garrigan moving upfield at speed – his default setting – who then got it in lovely to Colin Hawdon. Colin was bounced upside down but was rolling up on his feet even as the free was given and tipped it over the bar without breaking stride. A Drumbaragh free just before the break left it Oldcastle 0-07, Drumbaragh 0-03 at half time.
Robbie Farrelly got the Oldcastle tally going again four minutes into the second half, but Drumbaragh took two frees to leave just three between the sides. That was as close as it would get though, a lovely Darren Hawdon intercept found Cian McPartland who found Colin Hawdon: he chipped it in to Eoin Gilsenan who found Oran Mulvanny who smashed it to the back of the net for the first goal of the match. Not long after, Oran O’Reilly cleared upfield via McPartland and Ronan Maguire, he found the waiting Colin Hawdon who hit the back of the net again, and effectively ended the match as a contest. A couple more from Robbie Farrelly, plus a lovely solo run all the way upfield by Lee Healy finished off by a point, saw the final score Oldcastle 2-11, Drumbaragh 0-08. That result sees Oldcastle safely through to the quarter finals, and hopefully some great matches to look forward to!
