Clann na nGael 1-20 Wolfe Tones 3-09

Clann na nGael got the better of Wolfe Tones and recorded their second win in five days in this year’s Intermediate Hurling Championship with a hard fought win over Wolfe Tones in Kilskyre on July 4th.

Following on from a stern test against Dunderry last Saturday, Clanns had to make a number of changes to the starting fifteen due to a combination of injuries and players being away, but the dept in this young and developing squad came to the fore.

Clanns opened the scoring with a number of well worked points and led by 0-06 to 0-00 after 15 minutes, until Wolfe Tones goaled to cut the deficit in half. Clanns better use of possession and intense work rate throughout the remainder of the first half with Jack Doherty, Killian Swaine and John O’Sullivan taking control of matters in defence and with Calum O’Sullivan and Eamon O’Donnchadha causing serious problems for Wolfe Tones up front, Clanns led at half time on a score line of 0-13 to 1-02.

Wolfe Tones upped their game from the start of the second half and if not for the intensity and hard running of Clanns Ollie Cassidy and Darragh Swaine in midfield, the outcome of this contest could have been so different. While Wolfe Tones scored two further goals in the second half, a fantastic move involving Eamon O’Donnchadha and Gary Cole resulted in the not so youthful Cole taking his opportunity to goal with pin point precision as he drilled the ball inside the right hand post and beneath the reach of the Tones keeper. Further points from O’Donnchadha and Josh McGrath in the remaining minutes ensured that Clann na nGael eventually ran out winners by 5 points on an impressive score line of 1-20 to 3-09.
