Tributes were paid to two great Meath Gaels, Frankie Byrne and MJ McGearty, who passed away recently, at last night's county committee meeting.
Central Council delegate Brendan Cummins said Frankie Byrne was a member of the Meath team that brought the Sam Maguire Cup to the county for the very first time in 1949 and that team became legends and there was no bigger legend than Frankie.
Frankie's tademark was his place-kicking and lengthy solo runs according to Cummins. He enjoyed a lengthy playing career and was always loyal to Meath despite living in Dublin for many years.
"Frankie became involved with the Sean Boylan teams in the late 1980s when Meath enjoyed further All-Ireland successes in 1987 and 1988. He will always have a special place in Meath GAA folklore," Cummins
continued.
Chairman Peter O'Halloran said there was a large Meath presence at his funeral for which his family were very appreciative.
MJ McGearty who was a former school teacher in Kildalkey had a long association with the Ballivor club and gave sterling service for many years. The Ballivor delegate attributed many of the clubs successes
over the year to the work of MJ.
