Rathkenny 1-5 (8)

St Ultans Cortown Gaels qualified for the final of the U21 B Championship with a convincing win over senior outfit Rathkenny in very wet conditions in Walterstown on Sunday.

As the spread of scorers indicates, this was a great team performance, where everyone worked hard for the result.

The winners started much brighter and led 2-5 to 0-0 with 15 minutes gone, with the goals coming from Luke Carberry and Martin Dolan, both excellent team moves, with special mention to Dolan, who's powerful running created his own goal chance, which was superbly taken.

Rathkenny then got going and had 1-1 registered by the 20th minute. This was Rathkenny's dominant period and they were unlucky to be thwarted three times by three outstanding saves from Keith Hennessey, one which was palmed over for a point.

Luke Carberry added another point in the 28th minute, followed by a Keith Curtis free for Rathkenny to leave the half time score 2-6(12) to 1-3(6).

The second half started brightly with the outstanding Hugh Staunton swapping passes before finishing to the net in the 33rd minute.

Luke Carberry then added another point from play in the 34th minute.

Rathkenny pushed hard after introducing some subs and scored points in the 38th and 50th minute.

Darren Kavanagh rounded off the scoring with a superb solo point which relieved the pressure and gave the team some time to catch their breath.

Some courageous defending was evident again as the lads guarded their lead and really, never looked like loosing this contest.

Apart from those mentioned there were excellent performances from Eoin McLoughlin, Declan Ball, Cian McBride and Brian Byrne.

Up next in the final are the winners of the semi-final between Ballinabrackey and Clann na Gael.
