Drumree/Kilmessan 1-12 Ratoath 4-17
Ratoath minor hurlers got the championship season for 2018 off to a winning start.
This game played in Drumree was a game of two starkly contrasting halves. The Ratoath team struggled to find top gear in the first half with only a few flashes of what the team could do with Fionn Murphy and Jack Lanigan cutting open the Drumree defence for two goals. In the same period Ratoath missed numerous goaling opportunities and started to run up a high wides tally. Drumree battled hard and stayed with the Ratoath team through the dead ball accuracy of Luke Horan. At half time the game was very much in the balance.
Half Time - Drumree/Kilmessan 0-10, Ratoath 2-5.
The second half saw a different Ratoath team take to the field. Within minutes Stephen Rice had the ball in the Drumree net and the forwards clicked into gear reeling off a further 12 points in the half. Drumree/Kilmessan fought out to the end but had no response to the Ratoath power that was brought to bear in the half. Aidan McLarnon finished the game with a deft overhead pull to the back of the net for the Ratoath team to register the last of their four goals. The Ratoath defence marshalled by Cian Kelly, really pulled out the stops in the second half and shut the combination team down. Good performance that saw 9 different scorers, and only 3 scores from frees for Ratoath. Next up for Ratoath in the championship is Kildalkey at home on Wednesday 29th August at 6.45pm.
