Meath to play Wexford and Dubs face Wicklow as Leinster U20FC quarter-finals set

Dublin are through to the quarter-finals of the Leinster U20 football championship after an improved second-half showing earned them a 2-20 to 3-9 victory over Westmeath at Parnell Park last night.

Ryan Kelly’s penalty had handed Westmeath the perfect start and, while Paddy Kelly did cancel it out in the ninth minute, Kealan Connell would find the net for the visitors and help move them towards a 2-6 to 2-4 half-time advantage, despite Kelly having netted his second for the Dubs.

A Paul Reynolds’ two-pointer squared the sides five minutes into the restart and, from there, the capital lads went on to outscore their opponent by 0-11 to 0-3 before Westmeath struck a late consolation goal.

It means Dublin will face Wicklow in the quarter-finals next Wednesday, with the Garden County having defeated Longford by 3-14 to 1-18 in Clonguish last night.

With their spot in the quarter-finals already secured, Meath slipped to a narrow 1-15 to 2-11 defeat at the hands of Offaly in Ashbourne where Brian Carroll’s goal at the death won it for the visitors who progress no further despite the win.

Kildare cemented their semi-final berth thanks to a 1-24 to 1-12 win away to Wexford who now face Meath in the last eight, while Carlow and Laois both exit after playing out at 1-13 to 2-10 draw at SETU, Carlow.
