NEWTOWN BLUES 3-14
ST PATRICKS 1-6
Newtown Blues eased into the semi-finals of the Louth Senior Championship when they brushed aside the challenge of St Patricks at The Grove on Sunday evening to set up a meeting with Dreadnots.
In a game that failed to produce the entertainment levels that many had hoped for, the county champions were in control from the early stages as the Pats failed to mount any serious challenge aside from a brief spell in the opening quarter.
The Blues got off to the brighter start and had three early points on the board but the peninsula side landed the first major blow when Aidan McCann got in for the opening goal of the game.
When Cathal Grogan landed a point in the 10 th minute, the Pats were ahead by 1-1 to 0-3.
However, they were unable to build on that advantage as the Blues quickly clicked into gear and a Ross Nally goal and point had his side three clear. The lead was soon six as Ciaran Downey scored his first goal just after the start of the second quarter.
The Pats failed to add to their tally for the remainder of the half and the Blues made the most of their superiority when Downey added a second just before the break to send his team in with a 3-6 to 1-1 lead.
There was ever going to be any way back for the Pats and although the second half was a much closer affair, there was never any chance of a comeback from the North Louth side.
The Blues continued to chip away at the points with subs Hugh McGinn and Jamie Kelly getting in on the act as their side ran out winners by a comfortable 14 points despite efforts in reply from Tadhg O’Connor, Evan White, Paddy Keenan and Cathal Grogan.
