The logical waste solution

November 27, 2011
Formed by Naomh Malachi clubman Johnny Rooney, Eco Logical Waste Management Ltd. is one of the premier commercial waste management companies operating in the North East. 'Wee County 2012' caught up with the founder / proprietor to take a closer look at the Courtbane-headquartered operation, which has a particularly strong presence in the urban areas of Dundalk and Drogheda.

Eco Logical Waste Management Ltd. was established in 2005 by managing director Johnny Rooney. Boasting over 20 years' experience in the waste industry, the company is committed to ensuring complete customer satisfaction while handling all waste types in accordance with EU environmental legislation. All removal and recycling is conducted in the most professional, cost-effective and environmentally-friendly manner possible.
The team at Eco Logical Waste Management is committed to delivering excellent service and providing an affordable skip hire and waste management service to all its customers.
The full range of waste management services provided includes: a comprehensive commercial skip-hire service (builders skips and Roll On Roll Off skips are available in a variety of sizes ranging from six cubic yards to 40 cubic yards); commercial wheelie bin collection for shops, restaurants, pubs and supermarkets; waste and recycling collection for apartment blocks and managed properties; cardboard, paper and glass collections; waste compacting and baling for shopping centres, factories and hotels; hazardous waste collection (asbestos and contaminated soil removal); confidential shredding; street sweeping; free site audits and consultation; and monthly waste management reports
Eco Logical's aim is to reduce the cost of waste disposal by recycling and reusing as much waste materials as possible, diverting it from landfill. Ecological Waste Management currently recycles 90% of all waste processed at its facility. Committed to the highest-possible standards, the company holds a waste facility permit from Louth County Council and a multi-regional waste collection permit from Meath County Council.
Every effort is made to meet and - if possible - exceed the requirements of all permits and legislation governing the waste industry. A documented Environmental Management System (EMS) is in place at the company's waste management facility. All permits are rigorously kept up to date and regular environmental monitoring and correspondence with the regulating authorities ensures operations are carried out with the minimum of negative environmental impacts.
The easily-accessible recovery facility is permitted to process up to 50,000 tonnes of material per annum and can accept a wide verity of material types from construction & demolition to commercial and industrial waste. Through innovative material processing and the identification of sustainable markets for recovered material, Eco Logical has exceeded its waste recovery targets for a number of years.
Eco Logical Waste Management can provide proactive advice and affordable complete solutions to help organisations reduce, recycle and recover the maximum amounts of waste in line with current and emerging legislation and directives.
Reflecting on the genesis of his self-made waste management company, Johnny Rooney notes: "We were initially set up to provide a service to Construction & Demolition but since the slowdown in that area we have moved more towards commercial waste. We've also diversified into tyre recycling as part of our ongoing recycling drive."
The company operates a fleet of nine specialist vehicles, covering a broad catchment area that runs along the east coast all the way from the border up to Dublin. A staff of ten is employed, all of whom reflect the company's ethos of maintaining a clean and sustainable environment.
On the GAA front, Johnny Rooney's allegiances lie very much with Naomh Malachi and he was delighted to see the Courtbane men preserve their Division Two standing in the season just passed. The Mals endured a difficult league campaign and finished second-from-bottom of the table, which meant they would have to go into a play-off to stay up. Hunterstown Rovers came through the Division Three play-offs but Naomh Malachi prevailed in the October 15th promotion / relegation decider on a comprehensive 1-21 to 3-3 scoreline.
Unfortunately, things didn't go quite so well in the 2011 Louth senior football championship as the Malachis surrendered their top-flight status following narrow play-off defeats to St Marys (2-15 to 1-15) and Dundalk Young Irelands (0-13 to 1-8). "They had a good run at senior and hopefully they can get back up again inside the next few years."
Johnny played with the Naomh Malachi / Kilkerley Emmets juvenile amalgamation up as far as minor level level back in the 1980s. Though he never played any adult football, he has continued to support his local club and is currently involved on the finance committee. As with any small rural club, it's all hands on deck and the MD of Eco Logical Waste Management has been actively involved in the club down through the years.
As a proud Louth man who runs a business providing vital services and employment in the Wee County - as well as all the indirect financial knock-on to the local economy that goes with that - Johnny is also a keen supporter of Louth GAA. Like the rest of us, he was disappointed by Peter Fitzpatrick's team's performances in the 2011 SFC but he is confident that they can rediscover their summer of 2010 form during the months ahead.
Playing in Division Two of the national football league will be of great assistance and here's hoping that the Reds will get back on course in 2012.
On the business front, Eco Logical Waste Management Ltd. has gone from strength to strength in the six years since its inception and the Courtbane-based waste management, skip hire and recycling company is in a strong position to continue providing key services to the people of Dundalk, Drogheda and beyond.
