Clonguish qualified for their first Longford SFC final in a dozen years following a thrilling 1-12 to 1-11 extra-time victory over Dromard at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park on Sunday.
The win sets up a local derby showdown with Luke Dempsey's Killoe on Sunday week and comes after Clonguish had knocked out former Leinster kingpins Mullinalaghta in the quarter-final. Despite losing Aussie Rules recruit Matt Duffy to injury at half-time, Dromard were in the driving seat after substitute Jamsie Martin’s 48th minute goal. But a late rally by the Newtownforbes outfit culminated in top-scorer Matthew Carey sending the tie to extra-time.
Clonguish got on top in the first period of extra-time, but a black card for former county star David Barden left them under pressure in the closing stages when Francis McGee was a whisker away from sending the game to a penalty shootout.
In the first semi-final on Saturday, substitute Ronan McGoldrick’s 42nd minute goal set up Emmet Óg Killoe for a 1-13 to 1-7 victory over Colmcille.
