UCC are Sigerson Cup champions for a 24th time after overcoming UL by 1-16 to 0-16 in a thrilling final which required extra time last night at the SETU Arena in Waterford.

Dylan Geaney’s early goal ultimately ended up proving the difference between the sides and the Dingle clubman would kick the last point in extra time to help ensure the Cork students’ triumph in the soaking wet conditions.

Beaten finalists last year also, UL hung with the leaders after Dylan’s early goal as points from Emmet McMahon, Darragh Cashman and Ciaran Downes helped them to trail by just two (1-5 to 0-6) at the interval.

UCC would hit the first three points of the restart via Geaney and Mark Cronin (2) prior to the Limerick lads hitting stride with seven points on the bounce.

A brace from McMahon would put UL two up and UCC would hit three unanswered themselves, including one from Michael O’Gara off the bench which was erased by Cashman to force extra time.

Billy Morgan’s side made a terrific start to the added periods, as points from Fionn Herlihy, Sean O’Connor and Cronin (free) saw them take command and defences would be on top in the second-half, with Geaney’s free the only score which was enough for UCC to take home the silverware.
