Wicklow down Leitrim to join Limerick in Tailteann Cup quarter-final draw

Wicklow will be in Monday morning’s draw for the Tailteann Cup quarter-finals following this evening’s preliminary quarter-final victory over Leitrim.

It finished 2-15 to 1-11 at Glennon Bros Pearse Park, where JP Nolan and Chris O’Brien netted the crucial goals to help see Oisin McConville’s men through to the last eight.

The Garden men looked in trouble when Barry McNulty’s goal steered Leitrim towards a 1-6 to 0-4 lead seven minutes before the break, but a perfectly timed Nolan goal three minutes later would see them only trail by three at the break.

A couple of Kevin Quinn points would see Wicklow getting level within six minutes of the resumption and a palmed goal from O’Brien surged them in front.

The Leinster side were able to maintain their advantage until the closing stages when a free from ‘keeper Mark Jackson and another placed ball from Quinn were backed up by the points of Padraig O’Toole and Gearoid Murphy to see them safely over the line.

McConville’s men now join Limerick in the quarters after the Shannonsiders’ 1-18 to 1-10 win against Tipperary in Rathkeale earlier today.
