As expected, delegates at today's Annual Congress held in the NUI Galway Connacht GAA Air Dome in Bekan voted overwhelmingly in favour of a new tiered All-Ireland football championship structure, which will be introduced in 2023.
The first motion on the official Clár, the 'Green Proposal', which would see the Allianz Football League played out in the spring and provincial championships in the early part of the summer, as normal, but with round-robin groups for the Sam Maguire and Tailteann Cup competitions to follow, was passed by a wide margin of 94.7% to 5.3%.
From next year onwards, the eight provincial finalists as well as the next eight best-placed teams based on league standings will compete for the Sam Maguire Cup. Meanwhile, the remaining 16 sides will enter the Tailteann Cup.
